Railway Track Route Test
The Railway Track Route Test is kind 1c of the Memory Test, Test 1 of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives 24 questions in 8 minutes, as two parts of 12. In each part you get 2 minutes to study a railway map and 2 minutes to answer. Then the names go, letters take their place, and you mark the letter that stands where each station was. It measures memory for place: you must hold each name together with its spot on the map.
On the study screen the map sits under its own Time Left clock, with the names written at the stations. When the clock reaches zero the map closes. The test screen shows the same tracks, a letter at every station and the names listed beside it. For each name in the question list you mark the letter now standing at its spot. Below come the screens in order, a method for fixing each name to its place, the RDSO guideline's example and a seven-day plan.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five options A to E against each station name; click the letter that now stands where that station was.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The rules appear in Hindi and English with an example: three stations, SOK, DET and PIR, named and then lettered. On the portal this screen allows 5 minutes; Skip Instruction starts the test sooner.
- 2
Study screen, Part 1
A railway map appears under a Time Left clock of 2 minutes. Broad gauge and metre gauge are drawn differently, every station is a dot, and the named ones carry their names. At zero the study screen closes and the names leave the map.
- 3
Test screen, Part 1
The map returns at the left with a letter at every station and the names listed beside it. At the right stand 12 questions, one per name, each with five options A to E. Find the letter at the station's place, click that option, then press Save & Next before the 2 minutes end.
- 4
Break, then Part 2
A short break with a summary follows. Part 2 opens by itself: a second map, 12 more named stations, 2 minutes to study and 2 to answer.
- 5
Submit
Press Submit, or the clock submits for you at zero. On the portal your T-Score appears at once, with a review of all 24 stations and each correct letter. In a Full Mock, Test 2 follows a break.
A worked example
- Study map: three named stations on a small railway map. SOK at the top of the branch line, DET on the main line to the right, PIR on the lower branch.
- Test map: the same tracks, with the letters A to E at the stations and the names listed beside it.
- 1. DET 2. PIR 3. SOK
The RDSO guideline's answers are C for DET, A for PIR and B for SOK.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Read the track before the names
Trace the lines first: the main line, where each branch leaves it, and which line is which gauge. The track stays unchanged on the test map. A station fixed to its line and junction can be found after its name has gone.
- 2
Give each station a place on the line
Travel the map like a train, in one fixed order: the main line, then each branch from its junction. Name each station by line and position: SOK, top of the branch; DET, main line, to the right. A phrase said once comes back with the name; a silent look at the map does not.
- 3
Close the map in your head
In the last moments, run the track from memory: junction, first station, second. Give your final look to the name you cannot recall; after zero there is no map to check.
- 4
From the question list to the letter
Take the name from the question and say its phrase. Ride the track with the mouse pointer to that dot; the letter sitting there is the answer. Click that option and press Save & Next.
7 tips that raise the score
1.Make the junction your anchor
The point where a branch leaves the main line is found at once. Count stations from it: first past the junction, second up the branch.
2.Use the gauge as a landmark
Broad gauge and metre gauge are drawn with different sleepers. A station on the thin line cannot sit on the thick one, so the gauge halves your search.
3.Count the dots, named or not
The test map keeps every dot and letters the unnamed ones too. If the names sat on the first, third and fifth dots, the letters you need sit on those dots.
4.Fix the ends of each line first
A terminus is the easiest dot to place, because the line stops there. Pin the last station on each branch first, then fit the middle names between the junction and the end.
5.Start Part 2 with an empty map
During the summary, drop the first map; nothing from it is asked again. Find the second map's junctions first.
6.Run down the name list first
On the test screen the names stand in a list beside the map. Read the list once and say each station's phrase before the first question. A name you cannot place is then known before its 10 seconds begin, and gets its likeliest letter at once.
7.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Reading the names and not the map, so you know the names but not their places.
- Forgetting that unnamed dots on the study map also carry letters on the test map.
- Looking for a station's shape on the test map, where every station is the same dot.
- Picking a letter from memory without tracing the track to the dot, and landing one dot off.
- Dwelling on an unsure station while the last names of the part go unanswered.
A 7-day plan for the Railway Track Route Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Find SOK, DET and PIR on the instruction screen's lettered map yourself. Then sit one paper with no aim but to see where the map, the name list and the questions sit on the screen. |
| Day 2 | Review that paper station by station: did you lose the name, or its dot? Fix the order you will travel every map in. |
| Day 3 | One paper, track first. Name the gauge of every line before you read a single station, then phrase the stations junction by junction. |
| Day 4 | One paper for speed. Trace the track to each letter with the mouse pointer and reach the twelfth name before Time Left ends. |
| Day 5 | One paper: pin the terminus of each branch first, then the middle names. In the review, check the end stations first. |
| Day 6 | Two papers on a laptop or desktop, with a rest between. On the second, count the dots on every branch before learning a name. Which T-Score is nearer 60? |
| Day 7 | Sit the free Full Mock. Whatever kind Test 1 brings, read the whole screen before learning anything, then move on to Test 2 without looking back. |
Questions students ask
▸How many questions are in the Railway Track Route Test and how much time do I get?
24 stations in 8 minutes, 12 in each of two parts. Each part gives 2 minutes of map, then 2 minutes of questions: 10 seconds a station. The portal's practice papers for this kind run on the same two clocks.
▸Railway Track Route Test kaise hota hai: what appears on the screen?
For 2 minutes you see a railway map with some stations named. Then the names vanish, each station gets a letter, and the names are listed beside the map. For each name you mark the letter at its old place.
▸Are the station names written on the test map?
No. On the test map the stations carry only letters. The names are listed beside the map, and each question is one name.
▸Do I need to know real railway stations or routes for this test?
No. The stations have short names like SOK, DET and PIR in the RDSO guideline's example. You are asked only where each name stood on the map.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give the Railway Track Route Test?
No. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Figure Find Test for Test 1, as the institute's records show. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Vehicle & Signal Position Test (1f) for Test 1.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
