House Position Test
The House Position Test is kind 1a of the Memory Test, Test 1 of the RRB ALP CBAT. In the hall it has 24 questions in 8 minutes, as two parts of 12. Each part gives 2 minutes to study a map and 2 minutes to answer. You memorise where each house stands on a map of roads and landmarks, then name the letter at each house's place. It measures memory for position: each house must be tied to the spot where it stood.
On the study screen a map appears: roads, a few landmarks and the houses in their places. When its clock ends, the test screen opens. The same map returns with letters where the houses stood, and the houses sit numbered below it. You click the letter at each house's old place and press Save & Next. This page gives the screen flow, a method for both stages, the RDSO guideline's example and a 7-day plan.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five options A to E against each numbered house; click the letter that now stands where that house stood.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The test opens with its rules in Hindi and English, a sample map and three example houses. On the portal this screen allows 5 minutes; Skip Instruction starts the test sooner.
- 2
Study screen, Part 1
The map appears under a Time Left clock of 2 minutes: roads, landmarks and the houses in their places. There is nothing to click or write; at zero the map closes and will not return.
- 3
Test screen, Part 1
The lettered map sits at the left, with the 12 houses numbered below it. The 12 questions stand at the right, each with A to E. Click the letter at each house's old place, then Save & Next: 2 minutes, 10 seconds a house.
- 4
Break, then Part 2
A short break with a summary follows. Then Part 2 opens by itself with a fresh map and 12 new houses. Again you get 2 minutes to study and 2 minutes to answer.
- 5
Submit
Press Submit, or the clock submits for you at zero. On the portal your T-Score appears at once, with a review of all 24 houses. In a Full Mock, Test 2 follows after a break.
A worked example
- Study page: a church, a school, a well, three houses and a tree stand along two roads.
- Test page: the same map with A, B, C, D, E at the buildings, and houses 1, 2, 3 below.
- Where did house 1 stand? Where did house 2 stand? Where did house 3 stand?
In the RDSO guideline's example the answers for houses 1, 2 and 3 are A, C and B.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Fix the frame before the houses
Read the roads and the landmarks first: how each road runs, where the well or the tree stands. The lettered map keeps the roads and every landmark.
- 2
Give every house an address
Walk the map in one order, for example the upper road left to right, then the lower road. Name each house by its neighbours: the house beside the well, the second one past the school. An address holds better than a picture.
- 3
Test yourself before the clock ends
In the last part of the 2 minutes, look away from the map and recall silently where each house stands. Any house you cannot place gets one more look. At zero the map is gone.
- 4
Go house, address, letter
Read the numbered house and recall its address. Find that spot on the lettered map, read the letter, click it and press Save & Next. If a house will not come back, click the likeliest letter and move on.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Give houses in open ground a fuller address
A house in open ground between two landmarks is harder to hold. Give it a fuller address, such as halfway between the well and the bend, and a second look before the clock ends.
2.Count the houses on each road
Hold a count for each road, for example three on the upper and two on the lower. A count is quick to hold and catches a house placed on the wrong road. On the test map, count along each road the same way before you click.
3.Start with the odd house
If one house stands apart, larger, alone, at a corner or at the end of a road, fix that one first. Place the rest around it.
4.Notice how the houses differ
The houses below the test map are shown by their look, numbered. Note what sets each apart before the study clock ends, so the right house goes to the right place. Two swapped houses cost two questions.
5.Go to the spot, not to the letters
On the test screen do not read the five letters first. Recall the house's address, find that spot on the map, and take the letter standing there. Reading A to E first invites a guess.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Staring at the whole map at once instead of reading it road by road.
- Memorising the houses as pictures without tying each one to a landmark.
- Marking a neighbour's letter because two houses on the same road were learnt as one spot.
- Carrying the Part 1 map into Part 2 and placing a new house where an old one stood.
- Spending the Part 2 study time regretting Part 1 instead of reading the new map.
A 7-day plan for the House Position Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read the instruction screen in full and place the example's three houses yourself. Check your letters against the answer above. Then sit one practice paper to meet the map and the clock. |
| Day 2 | Open the review. For each wrong house, note why: no address, a neighbour's spot, or two houses swapped. Choose your route through the map and keep it from today. |
| Day 3 | Study stage. Sit a paper and spend the full 2 minutes on each map: frame, addresses, self-test. Finish the addresses before Time Left reads a minute. |
| Day 4 | Test stage. Sit a paper at 10 seconds a house: house, address, letter, Save & Next. Reach house 12 in both parts with seconds to spare. |
| Day 5 | Two maps, two memories. Before the Part 2 map opens, drop Part 1. In the review, mark every Part 2 error that came from the first map. |
| Day 6 | One paper in the morning, one in the evening, both on a laptop or desktop. Between them, draw the morning's two maps from memory and check them against the review. Note whether the evening T-Score moved towards 60. |
| Day 7 | Sit the free Full Mock on a laptop or desktop. If Test 1 arrives as a map kind, read the roads first, as you did all week; if another kind comes, keep the same fixed order. Then go on to Test 2 without replaying the map. |
Questions students ask
▸How many questions are in the RRB ALP House Position Test and how much time do I get?
24 questions in 8 minutes, in two parts of 12. Each part gives 2 minutes to study the map and 2 minutes to answer: 10 seconds a house. The portal's practice papers keep this count and clock.
▸ALP house position test kaise hota hai: what exactly is asked?
A map with houses and landmarks is shown for 2 minutes. Then the map returns with letters at the places and the houses numbered below it. For each house you click the letter at its old place, A to E.
▸Do the houses on the test page look the same as on the study map?
Yes. Each house appears below the test map as it looked, with its number, so you know which is which. Only its place on the map has become a letter.
▸Did the last ALP exam give the House Position Test?
No. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Figure Find Test for Test 1, as the institute's records show. The hall may give any of the six kinds of the Memory Test, so practise this one too. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Vehicle & Signal Position Test (1f) for Test 1.
▸How is the House Position Test different from the Railway Track Route Test?
Both are kinds of the Memory Test and both use a map. Here you place houses on a map of roads; in the Railway Track Route Test (1c) you place stations on a railway map. The newer Vehicle & Signal Position Test (1f) gives a street map with vehicles and then a railway map with rail signals, lettered A to D. The portal has practice papers for all three.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
