Test 3 of 5 · RRB ALP CBAT
Depth Perception Test
The Depth Perception Test is Test 3 of the RRB ALP CBAT, the psycho test after CBT 2. In the hall it comes as the Brick Test (3a) or the Hidden Cube Test (3b). Both show a flat drawing of a pile; you count what the drawing only partly shows. The Brick Test gives 50 questions in 5 minutes; the Hidden Cube Test gives 50 questions in 10 minutes. The test measures how you read depth: what stands in front, what is behind, what must be underneath. Both kinds follow the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020).
On screen you see a drawing of bricks or blocks, all the same size and shape. The questions and their number options sit beside it. You count, click a number and press Save & Next while the Time Left clock runs down. The depth must be read from the lines of the drawing alone. This page explains both kinds and gives the counting method, the mistakes that cost marks and a 7-day plan.
The hall gives one kind for Test 3, with that kind's own count and clock (RDSO guideline, ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020). T-Score 42 or more is needed in this test, as in every test.

The 2 kinds of question in the Depth Perception Test
Test 3 opens as the Brick Test (3a) or the Hidden Cube Test (3b), and you learn which only then. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Hidden Cube Test, as the institute's records show, so prepare both. The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives the Brick Test, so practise it first.
| Code | Kind of question | What it asks | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3a★ | Brick Testईंट परीक्षण | A pile of bricks, some lettered: count the bricks touching each lettered one. | 50 | 5 min |
| 3b | Hidden Cube Testछिपे घन परीक्षण | A pile of blocks: count the blocks hidden on every side by the others. | 50 | 10 min |
★ The kind the railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives for this test. Each kind has its own page with a worked example, the method and a plan.
How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The test opens with an instruction screen in Hindi and English, with a worked example. Brick Test: one pile with its five answers. Hidden Cube Test: three practice piles, solved as 2, 4 and 3. On the portal this screen allows 5 minutes and can be skipped.
- 2
Test screen and clock
The Time Left clock starts with the first question. Brick Test: one pile on the left, its five questions on the right, one for each lettered brick A to E. Each question has numbers to click; options past the right edge need the scrollbar. Hidden Cube Test: the piles come in parts, each pile with its numbered options on one line.
- 3
Count, mark, Save & Next
Click a number and it is kept as your answer. Save & Next opens the next pile or the next part; the question numbers run on to 50.
- 4
The clock submits
When Time Left reaches zero the test closes and every marked answer counts. A blank question scores nothing, so a quick count on every pile beats a careful count on half of them.
- 5
Break, summary and T-Score
In a Full Mock a short break with a summary follows, and then Test 4. In a practice paper your T-Score appears the moment you submit.
The method
- 1
Fix the rule before the clock starts
Brick Test: how many bricks touch the lettered brick. Hidden Cube Test: how many blocks have every side and corner covered. Say the rule to yourself in one line on the instruction screen, and do not mix the two.
- 2
Build the pile from the back and the bottom
Find the base layer first; every brick or block above it needs something below. In the Hidden Cube Test the RDSO guideline gives you a start: the farthest row's base always has three blocks. Fix that row first, then build forwards and upwards from it.
- 3
Count in one fixed order
Brick Test: check the lettered brick's six sides in the same order every time: above, below, left, right, front, back. Hidden Cube Test: go layer by layer from the bottom and ask of each block whether any part shows. One order for every pile; nothing is missed, nothing is counted twice.
- 4
Mark and move
Click the number, press Save & Next and start the next pile in the same order. If a count will not settle, mark the closest number and move on.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Count the example before the clock
The instruction screen shows solved piles: one with five answers in the Brick Test, three in the Hidden Cube Test. Count them yourself before you read the answers. A match means the rule is clear; a miss shows you which rule you had wrong, while it still costs nothing.
2.Hidden is stricter than it sounds
In the Hidden Cube Test a block that is mostly out of view is still not hidden. Only a block with nothing in view counts. Before you add a block, look for any face, edge or corner of it. If one shows, leave it out.
3.Skip the top layer
A block with nothing on it shows its top face, so it is never hidden. Hidden blocks sit under the top layer with blocks in front of them and beside them. Start your search one layer down.
4.Know your seconds
The Brick Test is 50 questions in 5 minutes: 6 seconds a question, or 30 seconds a pile of five. The Hidden Cube Test is 50 questions in 10 minutes: 12 seconds a pile. Count once, click and move; a second look costs the next pile its seconds.
5.Use the review, then sit the paper again
After submitting, open the review and look at every pile you got wrong, with the correct count beside it. You may sit the same paper up to 3 times; only the highest T-Score of your attempts is kept.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Starting to count before the instruction screen has told you which of the two kinds the hall has chosen.
- Trusting the first impression of the pile instead of fixing its layers before you count.
- Practising only the kind the last exam gave, and meeting the Brick Test's 5-minute clock unprepared.
- Keeping one pace for both kinds: a Brick Test pile gets 30 seconds, a Hidden Cube Test pile only 12.
- Sitting every practice paper on a phone, so the mouse, the scrollbar and the shared screens feel new on the day.
- Changing your counting order halfway through the paper, so the second half is slower and less sure than the first.
A 7-day plan for the Depth Perception Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read both instruction screens on the portal. Work through the RDSO guideline's examples until each count is clear. Brick Test: A 2, B 3, C 3, D 4, E 4. Hidden Cube Test: 2, 4 and 3. |
| Day 2 | Sit one Hidden Cube Test practice paper without chasing the clock. Set the three-block back row and build each pile layer by layer. |
| Day 3 | Sit one Brick Test practice paper the same way. Run the six checks in order for each lettered brick, above to back. In the review, check every count against the correct one. |
| Day 4 | First timed Hidden Cube Test paper at full pace: 50 questions in 10 minutes. Open the review at once and note every pile where a visible edge fooled you. |
| Day 5 | First timed Brick Test paper at full pace: 50 questions in 5 minutes. Reach the tenth pile; a close count on a hard brick is worth more than a blank. |
| Day 6 | Free Full Mock on a laptop or desktop: all five tests in one sitting. Read the Depth Perception row's T-Score on the scorecard and compare it with 42 and with 60. |
| Day 7 | Second timed paper of the kind that scored lower on Day 4 or Day 5, with the aim of beating that T-Score. |
Questions students ask
▸Is the ALP depth perception test the Brick Test or the Hidden Cube Test?
Either one. The hall decides and does not say in advance, so practise both kinds on the portal, each with its own count and clock. The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives the Brick Test, so practise it first.
▸How many questions are in the RRB ALP Depth Perception Test?
The Brick Test gives 50 questions in 5 minutes: ten piles with five lettered bricks each. The Hidden Cube Test gives 50 questions in 10 minutes.
▸Is there a study part in the Depth Perception Test, like the Memory Test?
No. Test 3 has no study part. The Time Left clock starts as the first pile appears, right after the instruction screen. Every second of the 5 or 10 minutes is for counting.
▸Do I need maths for the Depth Perception Test?
No. Every answer is a count of bricks or blocks, and nothing is calculated. The skill is reading depth from a flat drawing: what touches, what is covered, what must stand underneath.
▸Which kind of the Depth Perception Test should I practise first?
Sit one paper of each at an easy pace, then give more papers to the kind with the lower T-Score. Keep the Brick Test in the mix even when it feels easier. Its 5-minute clock is the faster of the two and needs its own pace.
▸Can I see the solution after a practice paper?
Yes. The T-Score comes the moment you submit, with a review of every pile and its correct count. A pile you doubt can be reported to the institute from the review screen.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
