Same Circle Test
The Same Circle Test is kind 5d of the Perceptual Speed Test, the fifth test of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives 60 questions in 8 minutes on one Time Left clock: 8 seconds a question. Each question shows a circle with arrows or marks round its rim, and five circles A to E to its right. Only one of the five is exactly similar to the left circle, and you click its letter. The test measures how fast your eye picks the true copy from four near copies whose arrows point differently.
On screen each question fills one row: the given circle, then five options with a radio button under each letter. You compare, click one radio and drop your eyes one row; Save & Next carries you forward. This page shows the screen from the instruction screen to Submit and the RDSO guideline's two example rows. The method has four steps, count, turn, place, click, and fits inside 8 seconds. The mistakes, a week's plan and the portal's papers come after.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five circles A to E, a radio button under each; click the one exactly similar to the left circle.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
Hindi and English instructions open the test, with two example rows already answered C and B. The portal gives this screen 5 minutes and a Skip Instruction button; use it once the two rows make sense.
- 2
A line across the screen
Every question is one line across the screen. It shows the number, the circle with its arrows, then circles A to E with a radio button under each.
- 3
Match place and direction
Find the circle whose arrows sit at the same places and point the same way as the left one. Click the radio under its letter.
- 4
Parts and one clock
The rows come in parts; Save & Next saves the part on screen and opens the next. One Time Left clock runs through all 60 questions, so there is no pause between parts.
- 5
Submit at 60 or at zero
Question 60 is followed by Submit; if Time Left reaches zero first, the test submits itself. The portal then shows your T-Score and a row-by-row review with the correct letter.
A worked example
- Row 1: on the left, a circle with arrows set around its rim. On the right, five circles whose arrows point in different ways; only one matches the left circle exactly.
- Row 2 is set out the same way: one circle on the left, five on the right. Again only one of the five is exactly similar.
In the example of the RDSO guideline the answers are C for row 1 and B for row 2.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Count the arrows first
Look at the left circle and count its arrows. An option with a different number of arrows is out, whatever else it shows. That count alone often thins the five.
- 2
Read the turn of the arrows
Note which way the arrows turn: clockwise along the rim or anticlockwise. Drop every remaining circle whose arrows turn the other way.
- 3
Match one arrow's place
Pick one arrow, the one nearest twelve o'clock, and fix its place on the rim as a clock position. Only the option with an arrow at that same place survives: that is your letter. If two options still match there, check a second arrow before you click.
- 4
Click, then the next circle
Click the radio button and let your eye land on the next row's left circle, ready to count again. Your 8 seconds belong to the next row, not to the one you have finished.
6 tips that raise the score
1.8 seconds a question
60 questions in 8 minutes is 8 seconds each, more than the Octagonal Test gives, and the arrows need it. Spend it on one count, one turn and one place, not on five full comparisons.
2.Exactly similar means exactly
A rotated copy or a mirror image is a wrong option placed to catch a hurried eye. The arrows must sit at the same places and point the same way, not merely look alike.
3.Marks work like arrows
Some rims carry marks instead of arrows. Count them the same way, give the one nearest twelve o'clock its clock place, and match that place first.
4.Think in clock positions
Give the arrow you track a clock place, 12, 3, 6 or 9, before you look right. A number travels across five circles faster than a picture, and it does not blur when the circles look alike.
5.Glance at the number before the click
Sixty rows at 8 seconds each leave time for one glance at the question number before every click. Make the glance part of the rhythm; it keeps the letter on the right row.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Accepting a rotated or mirrored circle whose arrows match in number but not in place or turn.
- Comparing every arrow of all five options when the count alone would have removed most of them.
- Checking the option circles against each other instead of against the left circle.
- Slowing to a crawl on one hard row and seeing Time Left reach zero with rows still unseen.
- Leaving the last rows blank when a quick click on the likeliest letter would have cost nothing.
A 7-day plan for the Same Circle Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Start with the two example rows. For each, count the arrows, read their turn and find the match, until C and B need no thought. Then sit one paper on a laptop with the 8-minute clock and accept whatever score comes. |
| Day 2 | Review yesterday's paper with four columns on a sheet of paper: count, turn, mirror, line. Tick the column each wrong row falls in, add the rows you never reached as a fifth, and see which column is longest. |
| Day 3 | A fresh paper with one rule: do not look right until you have counted the arrows and said their turn. Rows that still go wrong are place errors; note them for Day 4. |
| Day 4 | Two papers in one sitting. The first at an easy pace, matching the place of one arrow on every row; the second at the hall's 8 seconds, with question 60 on screen before Time Left shows zero. |
| Day 5 | Full Mock day on a laptop: all five tests in one sitting. Test 5 comes as one of its five kinds, so it may not be this one. Afterwards note how many rows of Test 5 you reached with tired eyes. |
| Day 6 | Open the Test 5 review from the Full Mock. If the wrong rows were rotations or mirrors, sit one paper where you name the turn aloud before anything else. Up to 3 attempts a paper; the highest T-Score counts. |
| Day 7 | Final paper: 60 rows of count, turn, place, click, with no second looks, then stop. Check which of the four wrong-answer groups from Day 2 has shrunk most over the week. |
Questions students ask
▸How many questions are in the RRB ALP Same Circle Test and how much time do you get?
The hall gives 60 questions in 8 minutes on one Time Left clock, which is 8 seconds a question. This portal's practice papers keep the same count and clock.
▸What does a Same Circle Test question look like?
A circle stands on the left with arrows around its rim. Five circles A to E stand on the right; the one whose arrows match place for place is the answer.
▸What is the difference between the Same Circle Test and the Octagonal Test?
The rule is the same, find the exact copy, but the figures and the clock differ. The Octagonal Test shows octagons with one inner mark, 96 in 5 minutes. Here the figures are circles with several arrows, 60 in 8 minutes, so each row gives you more time.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give the Same Circle Test?
No. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Same Figure Test for Test 5, as the institute's records show. That kind also wants the exact copy, so the no-rotation, no-mirror habit you build here carries over. Still sit papers of all five kinds. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Octagonal Test (5b).
▸Is a rotated circle counted as the same circle?
No. Exactly similar means the same arrows at the same rim places, pointing the same way. A rotated or mirrored circle is a wrong option, and the turn and place steps of the method above remove it.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
