Octagonal Test अष्टकोण परीक्षण
The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives this kind for the Perceptual Speed Test
The Octagonal Test is kind 5b of the Perceptual Speed Test, the fifth and last test of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives 96 questions in 5 minutes on one Time Left clock. In every question an octagon with a mark inside stands on the left and five on the right; one is identical, and you click its letter. The test measures how fast your eye picks the exact copy out of four look-alikes, and whether you stay accurate at that pace.
On screen each question is one row: the given octagon, then options A to E, each with a radio button beneath. You find the identical octagon, click its button and drop to the next row; Save & Next opens the next part. Read on for the screen as the hall shows it, the RDSO guideline's three example rows and a method built for a 3-second row. After that come the clicks that lose marks, a week's plan and the portal's papers and free Full Mock.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five octagons A to E with a radio button under each; click the letter of the one identical to the left figure.

How the test runs on screenस्क्रीन पर कैसे चलता है
- 1
Instruction screen
Instructions appear in Hindi and English with three worked rows; their answers are D, A and D. The portal allows 5 minutes on this screen and shows a Skip Instruction button, so read it once and go.
- 2
One row per question
The test screen shows the question number, the given octagon and five octagons lettered A to E. A radio button sits under each letter.
- 3
Click the letter
Find the octagon that is identical to the one on the left and click the radio button under its letter. One click is the whole answer.
- 4
Save & Next and the clock
Save & Next saves the rows on screen and opens the next part. One Time Left clock runs through all 96 questions.
- 5
After question 96
When the last row is clicked, Submit ends the paper; if the 5 minutes run out first, the clock ends it. Your T-Score follows at once on the portal, and the review marks the right letter on each of the 96 rows.
A worked exampleउदाहरण
- Row 1: on the left, an octagon with a hand pointing to about two o'clock. On the right, five octagons with hands at different angles. Find the one whose hand points exactly the same way.
- Rows 2 and 3 are set out in the same way. One octagon stands on the left, five on the right, and only one of the five is identical.
In the example of the RDSO guideline the answers for the three rows are D, A and D.
The method: how to attempt a questionतरीका
- 1
Read the hand as a clock time
Read the left octagon's mark as a clock time: two o'clock, straight up, nine o'clock. Do not study the sides; in most rows the options differ only in the mark.
- 2
Sweep A to E for that time only
Glance at the five hands in turn and drop every one that points elsewhere. One left is your answer; two left means the mirror check comes next.
- 3
Settle a tie by the mirror
A hand at two o'clock and one at ten o'clock look alike when you rush. If two options remain, one is usually the mirror of the other; pick the one whose mark lies on the same side as in the left figure.
- 4
Click and drop one row
Click the radio button under the letter, then move your eyes straight to the next row's left octagon. Do not look back at a finished row; it costs a new row.
6 tips that raise the scoreसुझाव
1.A little over 3 seconds a question
96 questions in 5 minutes is about 19 a minute, a little over 3 seconds each. That is enough for one look left, one sweep right and one click, nothing more.
2.Only the exact copy is right
In the Similarity Test (5a) the closest option wins; here only the exact copy is right. A near match is a wrong option, placed there to catch you.
3.Check the clock once
Glance at Time Left once, near question 48, the halfway mark. Half the time gone with half the rows done means the rhythm is right.
4.Hold a steady rhythm
A steady 3 seconds a row beats a careful 10 followed by a panic. If a row will not settle, click the better of two and go on.
5.Stay on your line
The number, the figure and the buttons lie on one line. After each click your eyes drop exactly one row. If you lose the line, read the question number before you click.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marksगलतियाँ
- Accepting the mirror image, a hand at ten o'clock for one at two o'clock, as identical.
- Clicking the closest option as in the Similarity Test, when only the exact copy earns the mark here.
- Studying the eight sides instead of the mark inside, where the difference usually lies.
- Watching Time Left on every row instead of once at question 48; each glance is a row lost.
- Clicking the button of the row above or below after the eye has slipped a line.
A 7-day plan for the Octagonal Test7 दिन की योजना
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Open the instruction screen and read the three example rows as clock times until D, A and D are obvious. Then sit one paper on a laptop and let the 5-minute clock run out if it must; today you are learning the row, not the score. |
| Day 2 | Review day. Go down yesterday's rows and put a letter against each wrong one: M for a mirror, N for a near match, L for a lost line. The letter you write most is the week's work. |
| Day 3 | A fresh paper with the clock out of sight. Say the clock time of the left hand before each sweep; if you catch yourself re-reading a row, that is the habit to break this week. |
| Day 4 | Two papers in one sitting. On the first, hold the 3-second rhythm and let accuracy fall where it will. On the second, bring accuracy back without losing the rhythm, so question 96 is on screen before Time Left shows zero. |
| Day 5 | Free Full Mock on a laptop or desktop. Test 5 comes after four other tests; count how many of its rows you reached, and whether the 3-second rhythm came back by the second part. |
| Day 6 | Second attempt of the paper that scored lowest; the highest of up to 3 attempts counts. Compare its review with Day 2 and see whether the letter you wrote most has shrunk. |
| Day 7 | Sit one paper in the morning at the 3-second rhythm, then stop. Compare the week's first T-Score with the last: the gap shows whether the rhythm has settled and how far you are from the portal's target, T-Score 60. |
Questions students askसवाल-जवाब
▸How many questions does the Octagonal Test have and how much time?
The hall gives 96 questions in 5 minutes on one Time Left clock; Save & Next moves you from part to part without stopping it. This portal's practice papers keep the same count and clock.
▸What does the figure in the Octagonal Test look like?
Each figure is an octagon with a mark inside. In the RDSO guideline's example it is a hand pointing to about two o'clock; the five options carry hands at different angles.
▸What is the difference between the Octagonal Test and the Same Figure Test?
Both are kinds of the Perceptual Speed Test and both ask for the identical figure. The Octagonal Test uses only octagons with an inner mark: 96 questions in 5 minutes. The Same Figure Test, kind 5e, uses mixed figures: 72 questions in 8 minutes.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give the Octagonal Test?
No. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Same Figure Test for Test 5, as the institute's records show. The Octagonal Test has the shortest clock of the five kinds, so a candidate who can hold its pace finds the others slower; practise all five. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives this kind, so practise it first.
▸Why is it called the Octagonal Test?
Because every figure is an octagon, a shape with eight sides. In most rows the octagons look alike and only the mark inside differs.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
