Letter Table Test
The Letter Table Test is kind 2a of the Following Directions Test, Test 2 of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives you 10 questions in 5 minutes, which is 30 seconds a question. A table of letters stays on the screen for the whole test. Each question is a direction: find the letter above, below or beside another, or read a row in reverse order. It measures one thing: whether you follow a written instruction exactly, at speed, without losing your place.
The table sits at the left and the 10 questions run down the right, each with five letters as options. Nothing has to be memorised; the table is in front of you from the first question to the last. The sections below walk through the screen and work out the RDSO guideline's example. Then come a method, the errors that lose marks and a plan for the week. After login, the free Full Mock places Test 2 among the five tests with the hall's timing.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five letters are given with each question; click one.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The test opens with its instructions in Hindi and English: the letter table, an example direction and its answer. The portal gives this screen 5 minutes; Skip Instruction starts the test sooner.
- 2
The test screen
The table of letters is fixed at the left. The 10 questions are stacked at the right, each with five letters as options. The Time Left clock starts at 5 minutes.
- 3
Answering a question
Read the direction, follow it on the table, and click the letter it leads to. Save & Next is not needed here: the answer is kept the moment you click, and you can change it until you submit.
- 4
Moving down the list
The mouse wheel is off, as on the hall screen. Drag the scrollbar to bring the next question into view.
- 5
Submit and result
Press Submit when all 10 are marked, or let the clock submit for you. Your T-Score appears at once, with the correct letter for every question.
A worked example
- Which is the only letter that appears directly above 'A'?
- If Row I and III are written in reverse order, which letter will come below C in Row II?
In the RDSO guideline's example the first answer is B. The guideline's twenty practice answers run D, E, B, C, A, A, D, B, C, E, D, D, D, C, A, A, E, E, C, E.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Find the anchor and the move
Read the direction to its end first. Every one has an anchor, a letter or a row, and a move: above, below, left, right or reverse order. Name both to yourself before your eyes drop to the table.
- 2
Fix the anchor on the table
Find the anchor letter and hold its row and column. If the direction names a row, count the Roman numerals downward, Row I first: Row I, Row II, Row III.
- 3
Make the move in your head
Above and below keep the column and move one row. Left and right keep the row. A reversed row reads right to left: its first letter becomes its last, and a middle letter stays put.
- 4
Check against the five options
The letter you reach must be one of the five options given with the question. If it is not, you have slipped a row or a column; read the direction once more and move again.
- 5
Click and keep your place
Click the letter and let your eye fall to the next direction, not back to the table. A question you were sure of is finished; look again only after the tenth.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Read in the language you read faster
Choose the line you read faster on the instruction screen and keep to it for all 10 questions. Switching between the Hindi and English lines mid-test costs seconds on every question.
2.Treat 'directly' and 'only' as exact words
Directly above means the same column, one row up, never diagonal. 'The only letter' promises a single answer; if two letters seem to fit, read the direction again and check your row and column.
3.Number the rows before the first question
On the instruction screen, give each row its Roman numeral, Row I first, and count the columns once. In the test a direction such as 'below C in Row II' then becomes a row number and a column number, and you stop counting under the clock.
4.Split an 'if' direction into two halves
Some directions carry a condition. Example: 'if D is right of C in Row IV, take the last letter; if not, the middle of Row III'. Settle the if first, with a plain yes or no. Only then read the half that applies.
5.Keep to 30 seconds a question
If a path is still lost after a second reading, click the likeliest letter and move on. Return at the end if the clock allows.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Counting from the wrong end of a reversed row, so the answer lands one letter off.
- Letting the eye slip a line and reading Row III when the direction says Row II.
- Taking 'above' as the letter one row up and one column across, instead of the same column.
- Reading the answer half of an 'if' direction before settling the if, and choosing the wrong half.
- Letting one lost path take a full minute, so the last two questions get no click before the clock submits.
- Practising only the Letter Table and meeting the Watch Table or the Number Table in the hall.
A 7-day plan for the Letter Table Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Open the instruction screen and work the guideline's example by hand: B above A, then the reversal question. Sit one practice paper; note which direction words slowed you. |
| Day 2 | Plain moves only: directly above, below, left and right. Sit one paper and read the review of every question, not only the wrong ones. |
| Day 3 | Reversals. Sit one paper; in the review, redo each reversed-row question with the mirror picture until it is automatic. |
| Day 4 | Conditional directions. Sit one paper and settle each if before you read its answer half. In the review, check that no if was answered by the wrong half. |
| Day 5 | Two papers back to back at hall pace, scrollbar only. The second paper shows whether the method holds when you are tired. Take a second attempt at the weaker one after its review. |
| Day 6 | Sibling day: a Watch Table paper, then a Number Table paper. Note which of the three kinds felt slowest; that kind gets an extra paper next week. |
| Day 7 | Full Mock, in one sitting: the Following Directions Test arrives fourth, after Memory, Depth Perception and Power of Observation, as in the railway's mock. On the scorecard, check whether its row cleared 42 and how far it sits from 60. |
Questions students ask
▸What is the Letter Table Test in the RRB ALP psycho test?
It is one of the three kinds of the Following Directions Test, Test 2 of the CBAT. A table of letters stays on screen. Each of the 10 questions asks you to follow a direction across it and name the letter you reach.
▸Did the last ALP exam give the Letter Table Test?
In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Watch Table Test for Test 2, as the institute's records show. The next exam can name any of the three, so keep the Letter Table in your weekly rotation beside the other two. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Watch Table Test again.
▸Does practising the Letter Table help with the Number Table?
Yes. The moves are the same: above, below, beside and reverse order. Only the cells change, from letters to numbers. A number can repeat in its grid, so the Number Table asks one extra check of you.
▸What does 'written in reverse order' mean in the Letter Table Test?
The row is read from right to left, like its reflection in a mirror. The first letter becomes the last, and a middle letter stays in its place. Only the rows the direction names are reversed; the others do not change.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
